Timezone changes and evil PDFs.

Filed under: Tech, Microsoft — nick @ 9:14 am

F-Secure released a statement that said emails with nefarious PDF files attached have seen a large increase since Friday. If you receive an email which looks like a credit report or credit card statement with an attached PDF file, DO NOT view the PDF, it will immediately begin downloading malfare from Malaysia or Sweden. There is a security update for Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be obtained from http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9803757-7.html.

Also, if you noticed your time on your computer is an hour behind this morning, you are still using the old dates for daylight savings time. As of 2007, DST dates in the United States and Canada will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March), and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November). If you have Windows XP, simply run Windows Updates (http://www.windowsupdate.com) to solve the problem. If you are running an older Windows OS, download TZedit (http://www.cddn.com/misc/TZEDIT.exe) and simply edit your appropriate timezone.

Charter Business Mail Authentication

Filed under: Tech — nick @ 7:17 am

Charter Communications has finally taken a big step in pulling their mail servers out of the grip of global spam networks and attempt to remove themselves from numerous blacklists. This will only be affecting business customers. See http://www.charter-business.com/smtp_index.aspx to learn more.

Watching the Watchers

Filed under: Cellular — nick @ 11:55 am

Over the weekend, a small storm erupted over new legal language that Verizon Wireless is passing quietly on to its subscribers. It appears as though the cellular provider is changing its terms of service to give the company the right to share sensitive calling data with third parties.

At issue is so-called Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) data. While CPNI data does not include explicit information identifying your name and address or your phone number, it does include data on the calls you make and receive, and the services that you may make use of. This includes information about the features of your phone and its capabilities. The data could easily be mined to see what kinds of businesses you call and how often.

Verizon Wireless has been contacting its customers via snail mail to inform them of their intent to share CPNI data with its “affiliates, agents and parent companies (including Vodafone) and their subsidiaries.” The company says that customers who do not want their CPNI data shared need to call 1-800-333-9956 to “opt-out.” Upon dialing the opt-out number, Verizon customers will be prompted for their phone number, billing ZIP code, and last four digits of their Social Security Numbers (in the case of businesses, their Employer ID numbers). Failure to opt-out will be interpreted by Verizon Wireless as “consent” to the company’s data-sharing practices.

Although the Federal Communications Commission has said that it is very concerned about the protection of CPNI data, and is exploring the possibility of strengthening its rules on the issue, Verizon’s opt-out notice appears to fulfill the Commission’s CPNI disclosure requirements.

Fall Movies that will melt your face from goodness.

Filed under: Movies — nick @ 7:38 am

Here is my list of fall movies that I will walk over fire to see.

3:10 to Yuma - Hollywood is going back to the Western. This looks likes Tombstone meets Gangs of New York.
Shoot Em’ Up - Clive Owen with a LOT of guns, protecting the innocent.
Across the Universe - Turbulent 60’s love story between Jude and Lucy, paired with lots of Beatles’ songs.
Dragon Wars - Based on the Korean legend, unknown creatures will return and devastate the planet. In this case - Dragons.
Southland Tales - From Richard Kelly of Donnie Darko fame, set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster.
Beowulf - Classic story chocked full of stars and directed by Robert Zimeckis. Angelina Jolie plays a crazy person - again.
Hitman - Based on the video game, we’ll watch Agent 47 do what he does best.
I Am Legend - The end has come and you are the last man on earth - almost. My favorite short story of all time. It looks like they may have changed it up quite a bit for the movie, but I’ve been waiting on this one for about 7 years.
Sweeny Todd - The demon barber of Fleet Street returns and is portrayed by the outstanding Mr. Johnny Depp. Based on the hit Broadway musical which tells the infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter). Wrapped into a dark little package by the masterful Tim Burton.

What are you looking forward to? Leave a comment.

Cross your fingers for the gPhone.

Filed under: Misc, Cellular — nick @ 7:21 am

The rumor mill is buzzing big time about a possible Google built cellphone that has so far been dubbed the “gPhone”. It is already being touted as an iPhone killer with over 20 different models to choose from, some with integrated GPS and special version of various Google apps including Maps. I refuse to get my hopes up but India based HTC (who built my current XV6700) has all but confirmed the phones existence and, if you believe the hype, we can look for the gPhone sometime in Q1 2008.

In other news, Beijing Police have said they plan on releasing “virtual officers” to patrol the cities gateway sites. These agents would allow a citizen to file a report with an officer-bot when they find content that shouldn’t be allowed within the Great Firewall of China. The capital city recorded its first sent email in 1987 and currently has about 100 new people connecting to the Internet every minute.

Vista Updates

Filed under: Microsoft — nick @ 7:38 am

Microsoft has just released two updates for Windows Vista. These are not beta updates and I suspect they will be added to Automatic Updates on “Patch Tuesday” (August 14th). The updates include a “performance and reliability” patch and a “compatibility and reliability” patch. The performance update purports to resolve:

You experience a long delay when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
A memory leak occurs when you use the Windows Energy screen saver.
If User Account Control is disabled on the computer, you cannot install a network printer successfully. This problem occurs if the network printer is hosted by a Windows XP-based or a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
When you write data to an AVI file by using the AVIStreamWrite function, the file header of the AVI file is corrupted.
When you copy or move a large file, the “estimated time remaining” takes a long time to be calculated and displayed.
After you resume the computer from hibernation, it takes a long time to display the logon screen.
When you synchronize an offline file to a server, the offline file is corrupted.
After you resume the computer from hibernation, the computer loses its default gateway address.
Poor memory management performance occurs.

The compatibility updates is said to fix:

The screen may go blank when you try to upgrade the video driver.
The computer stops responding, and you receive a “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error message. You can restart the computer only by pressing the computer’s power button.
The computer stops responding or restarts unexpectedly when you play video games or perform desktop operations.
The Diagnostic Policy Service (DPS) stops responding when the computer is under heavy load or when very little memory is available. This problem prevents diagnostics from working.
The screen goes blank after an external display device that is connected to the computer is turned off. For example, this problem may occur when a projector is turned off during a presentation.
A computer that has NVIDIA G80 series graphic drivers installed stops responding.
Visual appearance issues occur when you play graphics-intensive games.
You experience poor playback quality when you play HD DVD disks or Blu-ray disks on a large monitor.
Applications that load the Netcfgx.dll component exit unexpectedly.
Windows Calendar exits unexpectedly after you create a new appointment, create a new task, and then restart the computer.
Internet Connection Sharing stops responding after you upgrade a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP to Windows Vista and then restart the computer.
The Printer Spooler service stops unexpectedly.
You receive a “Stop 0×0000009F” error when you put the computer to sleep while a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection is active.

These items can be downloaded from their respective links. While no official announcement has been made about the release of Vista Service Pack 1, I suspect it will be in November and you can be pretty sure that these updates will be a part of it.

Inspiron 1300 and Xubuntu

Filed under: Linux, Hacking — nick @ 7:45 am

So I recently decided to install Xubuntu on my second laptop, an Inspiron 1300. First off, I absolutely recommend a ‘buntu installation for a myriad of reasons, the least of which not being the fact the the base install fits on a CD. There was some work to do after the install but after a bit of tweaking everything is working great. Here is a break down of the post-install status.

CPU, RAM, HD, etc - All were detected correctly and usable, NTFS drivers are even included on the distro so I can read my 10gb partition that contains an XP Pro load.

Ethernet Card - Worked without any additional manipulation.

Wireless NIC - The newest kernel includes a driver (bcm43xx) that is supposed to work with Broadcom wifi nics. I have found (many times) that this is not the case. Install ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-utils and load the Windows drivers for your NIC (use apt-get install for these packages). Be sure to blacklist the bcm43xx driver in /etc/modules/blacklist (YMMV depending on your distro). Also, get familiar with the iwconfig command. I suggest checking out its man page.

Display - The highest resolution you’ll get with the included Intel 9xx driver is 1024×768 which doesn’t really look all that great on a wide screen display. Apt-get the 915resolution package, and be sure to read the INSTALL file to update your xorg.conf and autorun 915resolution. You’ll soon have a clean, crisp, 1280×800 wide screen display.

Everything else was a piece of cake. Of course you’ll want to check out the Synaptic Package Manager so you can peruse the thousands of open source, freeware packages available to you.

My $0.02

-Nick
